GLEN ELLYN – Candidates for the Illinois General Assembly shared their thoughts on everything from gun control to immigration to abortion during the League of Women Voters of Glen Ellyn’s candidate forum Sept. 27 at Glenbard South High School in Glen Ellyn.
In response to a question about legalizing marijuana for recreational use, 46th Illinois House District candidiate Jay Kinzler of Glen Ellyn said medical marijuana has been shown to alleviate the need for opioids in alleviating pain, but he has seen marijuana as a gateway drug when used recreationally.
“I think it’s dangerous. I think that needs a little more study. So at this time, I’m in favor of medical marijuana where it’s been proven … that it’s helpful, and I’m not in favor of recreational marijuana,” said Kinzler, a urologist who has served on the Glen Ellyn Environmental Commission and Glen Ellyn Park District Board of Commissioners.
The Republican candidate made remarks independently because incumbent state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, was absent.
